What is CHIROPRACTIC?

Why Check a Child for Vertebral Subluxation?

Is it safe to have a child adjusted?

  What is CHIROPRACTIC?

Chiropractic is a non-invasive, drug-free science, philosophy and healing art that optimizes nervous system function.  Your nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord and miles of nerve tissue. It is the electrical system through which the brain controls every function in the body. Electrical impulses originate in the brain, travel down the spinal cord and flow out through the spinal nerves to direct the function of every organ, muscle and cell.

When spinal vertebrae or joints in the body are out of place (a subluxation) due to stress or trauma, the nervous system becomes irritated and blocked. Energy and information become “stuck” and the body can’t operate at its best. Chiropractors remove these blocks with gentle, specific adjustments, thus allowing the body to heal itself once the energy and information are restored.

Chiropractic and Children

While other health care providers treat only a child’s symptoms, your Chiropractor constantly strives to find the cause of the problem by assessing the nervous system, the body’s master control system. Because the nervous system maintains and controls all functions of the body, including the immune system, it just makes sense to keep your child’s nervous system as healthy as possible allowing them to reach their maximum health potential.

Why Check a Child for Vertebral Subluxation?

Chiropractors look for Vertebral Subluxation. This means interference to the spinal cord and/or spinal nerve roots that travel between vertebrae in the spinal column. It often results from the stresses of everyday activities. Physical stress, such as fall, jolts, jars, tumbles and accidents (playground, etc.) as well as emotional tension and stress are but a few of the ways children acquire vertebral subluxations. A perfect example is to look at an infant asleep in a car seat, look at the position of the child’s neck and head. This postural distortion is just a sample of the way children acquire vertebral subluxations.

Is it safe to have a child adjusted?

Absolutely, as a matter of fact it is so safe chiropractors even work on infants and new-borns. There are plenty of studies in the medical literature that prove this. If you want just go to www.ICPA4kids.com and click on the research tab and then on safety issues and you’ll find them. Another way to look at the safety of Chiropractic is to look up the malpractice rates of physicians in your state. You will find that Doctors of Chiropractic have extremely low premiums compared to their medical counterparts. This is a significant indicator of safety since it’s based upon claims made and paid.

Another thing most people are not aware of is that Chiropractors use different techniques on children compared to the average adult. They are much gentler and some are actually considered non-force techniques. Children actually respond very well and very quickly to chiropractic care in most cases. And because chiropractic removes interference from the nervous system, which controls the immune system, clinical cases reveal that children under care have significantly reduced frequency of illness. Also noted is that when children do get sick the severity and duration is lessened due to the chiropractic care.
